NEW YORK (AP) —Efforts to turn what was once the largest landfill site in the world into a public park hit a milestone Sunday with the opening of the first section open to the public, New York City officials said. The 21-acre (8.5-hectare) North Park section of what has become Freshkills Park includes pedestrian and cycling paths, an overlook deck, bird viewing tower and composting restroom that uses no water. The 2,200-acre (890-hectare) Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island was once the largest landfill site in the world. For five decades after its opening in 1948, it was the principal landfill for New York City’s garbage. The last barge of regular trash was delivered in 2001 when then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani closed the site, partly in response to Staten Island residents who had complained about being the city’s dumping ground.

ATLANTA (AP) — A federal judge who rejected efforts by former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to move his charges in the Georgia election subversion case to federal court is set to hear arguments Monday from former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark on the same issue. Clark is one of five defendants seeking to move his case to federal court. While the ruling could signal an uphill battle for Clark and the others, Jones made clear he would assess each case individually. The practical effects of moving to federal court would be a jury pool that includes a broader area than just overwhelmingly Democratic Fulton County and a trial that would not be photographed or televised, as cameras are not allowed inside federal courtrooms. The law allowing federal officers to move a case to federal court “is designed to protect legitimate federal authority from state and local interference, not to afford a federal forum to individuals who blatantly sought to misuse the weight of federal authority to interfere with matters of state control,” prosecutors wrote.

Washington CNN —A Georgia indictment of former President Donald Trump for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election lists at least 27 lies Trump told about the election – and that’s counting conservatively. A federal indictment in early August, which also charged Trump for his efforts to subvert the will of the voters, listed 21 of his election lies. Trump’s lie that he was the real winner of the 2020 election. Trump’s lie that “about 4,502” people voted in Georgia even though they weren’t on the voter registration list. Trump’s lie that “as many as 2,560 felons with an uncompleted sentence” were permitted to vote in Georgia.

The new report concluded officials did not take the intelligence they did receive seriously enough before Jan. 6. "Those agencies failed to fully and accurately assess the severity of the threat identified by that intelligence," investigators concluded. The report found that FBI received a tip in December 2020 that the far-right Proud Boys planned to be in Washington. Peters' committee staffers focused their findings on the "two primary domestic intelligence agencies," the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Intelligence and Analysis. The Department of Homeland Security emphasized that it had already ordered a review of its Office of Intelligence and Analysis.
